Using Intranet Agents to Capture Tacit Knowledge
نویسنده
چکیده
People can easily determine whether or not a given document is interesting just by glancing through it. However, when asked to explicitly list the rules upon which such a decision is based, they are unable to do so. This is because our personal interests are examples of tacit knowledge. I have implemented a prototype agent-based retrieval system, capable of finding web documents matching a user's interests and connecting users with similar profiles. Based on empirical findings from this prototype I claim that agent-based retrieval systems may be used to capture our professional interests, thus making otherwise elusive tacit knowledge tangible. By using agent-based retrieval systems two otherwise troublesome obstacles are avoided: interests may be defined by examples instead of specific keywords, and there now exists a natural incentive for creating and maintaining a search profile.

Although tacit knowledge constitutes the major part of what we know, it is difficult for organisations to fully benefit from this valuable asset. This is because tacit knowledge is inherently elusive, and in order to capture, store, and disseminate it, it is argued that it first has to be made explicit. However, such a process is difficult, and often fails due to three reasons: (1) we are not n...

متن کاملCollaboration and Knowledge Management through Intranet Technology. Learning Practices and Contexts in an Italian and a Uk Company
The paper, based on an ongoing doctoral thesis, proposes an interrelated analysis of knowledge and technology, starting from a constructivist approach which considers technology as the result of practices of learning and social construction. On the one hand, interpretations of knowledge embedded in two Intranets in an Italian and a UK company are presented, as indicators of interpretative flexi...
متن کاملGraphically Defining Articulable Tacit Knowledge
Although codified knowledge and its capture is commonplace, tacit knowledge has up until recent years proved elusive in its inclusion within the organisation's knowledge base. Codified knowledge or articulate knowledge is knowledge that we are all quite familiar with and includes for all intents and purposes the entire range of printed and electronic media. We present here an approach aimed at ...
